Vibe coding for CHROs in education.

A CHRO at a school district, university or training company hires against the academic calendar, negotiates with unions and tenure rules, and must clear every adult who comes near students before they set foot in a building. The tension is that your safeguarding obligations run on hard dates, from clearance renewals to certification expiry, and the tool you build is the only thing checking them on a Tuesday in October.

ROUND 01 — Education rules

What is true about software in education before you write a prompt.

Schools, universities, training companies and edtech businesses all have the same shape of problem: a learning platform that does most things and a long tail of tools it does not. Executives are building the tail: an enrolment workflow, a parent portal, an assessment tool, a course marketplace. Most of them hold data about students, and some of those students are children.

  • Student data has its own laws

FERPA in the United States, GDPR in Europe, and rules about children's data almost everywhere. A tool that stores a student's name, grades or attendance is regulated, and a tool used by under-13s has additional consent requirements.

  • Parents, students and staff see different things

Role-based access is not optional. A parent must see only their child. A student must not see another's grades. The AI will build a single login unless told otherwise.

  • Accessibility is required

Education tools are often legally required to be accessible. A page built fast with no attention to screen readers or keyboard navigation can be non-compliant on day one.

  • Term start is your launch day

Enrolment tools and portals get their year's traffic in one week. Hosting and caching have to be ready for it, and a failure that week costs a term's trust.

ROUND 02 — What it buys you

What a CHRO in education gets back first.

  • 01The clearance nobody checks on a Tuesday in October

Fingerprinting, state and federal background checks and child protection clearances for employees, substitutes, coaches and volunteers, with renewal dates. Nobody starts before it clears and nobody stays after it lapses, without a person having to remember.

  • 02The endorsement mismatch the state finds for you

Each teacher's licence, subject endorsements and expiry matched against the classes they are assigned in the student information system. A teacher outside their endorsement is a compliance finding and sometimes a funding clawback, and you see it at timetabling.

  • 03The six in the morning phone calls

Absences matched each morning to substitutes with a current clearance and the right certification for that building, offered in the order the union contract requires. The front office stops starting every day on the phone.

Four more hold for CHROs in any industry. They are on the CHRO page.

ROUND 03 — What breaks

An expired clearance keeps getting scheduled

The tracker shows the renewal date but nothing enforces it. A volunteer coach's clearance expires in November, the substitute fill tool keeps offering them shifts because it checks the pool, not the clearance, and they are in front of students for four months. When a parent asks, the district has a record proving it knew the date and did nothing. The check belongs in the database, not in a colour on a dashboard.

The pattern underneath is the one every CHRO hits: the dashboard has no login, or a login with no permissions, and the pay equity view is one URL away from the whole company. This is the most common failure in HR tools built fast.

ROUND 04 — The stack

What a safe build in education usually runs on.

Builds run on a standard web stack with Postgres, single sign-on from the institution's identity provider or a properly scoped login for parents and students, integrations with the learning platform and the student information system through read-only keys, and accessibility checked before launch.

ROUND 05 — With a CTO in your corner

What changes for a CHRO in education.

A CTO in your corner treats people data as what it is: the most sensitive data in the building. Every tool gets a real login with roles, so managers see their team and nobody sees pay they should not. Sensitive records go where the rules say, with a way to delete them. Access granted is access revoked. You still build the tools your team needs. Nobody's salary ends up in a screenshot.
